Todd Gothard
M.A., LPC
When I attended my first counseling session as a client after some difficult personal experiences, my counselor told me all I needed was an “attaboy,” an affirmation that I was doing my best. Little did I know at the time, I needed so much more. I needed to gain a better understanding of my identity and to learn to connect with another person. What I truly needed was safety to be who I am and a compassionate fellow traveler as I journeyed through life.
Many of us have assumed the labels others have placed upon us. I do not believe these labels can fully explain who we are or what we are experiencing. I believe through presence and compassionate curiosity we can become more mindful of ourselves and begin to experience the safety and connection we long to know. In the moments when our masks are removed, we can know truth and love. The poet Rumi wrote: “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” My aim is to provide a safe space and establish a growing connection so you can determine those obstacles.
Within that safe space we devote ourselves to addressing obstacles such as: Addiction to alcohol and/or drugs, Trauma, Grief, Unhealthy habits, Anxiety, Depression, and Relationship Issues.
My undergraduate degree is in Biological Engineering from Mississippi State University, and I earned a Master of Divinity from Covenant Theological Seminary. In 2020, I graduated from the University of Montevallo with a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. My wife, Jaclynn, and I were married in 1995 and have three grown sons and a teenage daughter. I enjoy woodturning, watching movies, eating international cuisine, and spending time with family.
