In Memoriam: Samuel A. Saxon, Consultant and Psychologist Emeritus

On Wednesday morning, June 28, 2023 our beloved Dr. Sam Saxon: colleague, co-founder, mentor, friend, and seasoned psychologist was called into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior. With multiple decades of work in the field and devotion to the Greater Birmingham community, his love, wisdom, and experience has mentored, served, and guided Trinity Counseling since its humble beginnings. His gentle, generous, kind, and loving heart also came with a magically quick wit and a profound sense of humor. We grieve this tremendous loss, but we do not grieve without hope because we know that our dear friend is with His Savior and has been received by grace with the words, “Well done My good and faithful servant.” He will be sorely missed by all of us!

Samuel Augustus Saxon, Ph.D. joined Trinity Counseling part-time in 2005 as a Licensed Psychologist. He brought with him over 40 years of experience as a teacher, researcher, trainer, and practitioner in the field of Clinical Psychology. He had been in private practice since leaving UAB Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology and as Associate Professor and Director of Psychology at the Center for Developmental and Learning Disorder where he taught clinical courses and conducted research in the areas of children and adolescent problems.

Dr. Saxon obtained his B.A. degree in 1965 in Psychology and Sociology at Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. Returning to the Low Country of South Carolina, he obtained his Ph.D. (1969) in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Carolina. After completing his Clinical Internship at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia in August of 1969, he moved to Birmingham, Alabama where he spent the rest of his life. He retired from practice in 2022.

Dr. Saxon had a deep and abiding love of the Reformed Faith and was consistently amazed by the richness of God's grace. He is survived by three grown daughters and two grandchildren.
